What belongs in a concrete estimate?

A useful concrete estimate describes the complete installation, not just a price per square foot. Match the dimensions, preparation, materials, finish and exclusions before comparing totals.

New residential projects. No repair-only or emergency-service promise.

Give every provider the same starting brief

Use the same intended footprint and use when discussing a new driveway, patio or slab. Note what exists now, what must be removed and whether equipment can reach the work area. Rough dimensions help the conversation, but the provider should verify them on site. Do not treat a phone estimate as a final design or a fixed price unless the provider expressly confirms its scope and conditions.

Separate visible finish from underlying work

Ask for excavation, disposal, base preparation, reinforcement when specified, placement, joints, finish and curing protection to be identified. Decorative color or pattern does not replace those items. A lower number may describe less removal or a different finish. Record exclusions next to inclusions so you can see what would require another contractor or a change order.

Make uncertain conditions explicit

Ask what happens if excavation reveals unsuitable material or an obstruction. Who decides the correction, how is it priced and when is written approval needed? For a driveway, clarify work at the street connection and responsibility for approvals. For a patio beside a home, clarify drainage and transitions. This guide does not provide local price figures because an address-specific scope is needed.

Keep the decision in writing

Before agreeing to work, compare the written scope, payment schedule, anticipated sequence, use restrictions while curing and any warranty terms. Ask who will perform the work and verify the necessary license and insurance. An information or connection website does not warrant the installation. Bring unresolved questions to the provider rather than assuming a missing item is included.
