Plan a patio around everyday use
Start with furniture and movement, then discuss the concrete footprint. A patio that looks large enough on paper can feel tight once chairs pull out and doors open.

Test the footprint before asking for a finish
Sketch the house wall, doors, gates and the area you hope to use. Add the furniture you intend to keep and trace the route between the house and yard. Approximate dimensions are enough to begin; do not excavate or install permanent markers around utilities. Bring the sketch to the provider for a site assessment.
Watch the surroundings
Record where roof runoff lands and where water gathers after rain. Note nearby irrigation, trees and changes in ground level. These observations help frame questions but do not diagnose drainage. Ask how the proposed surface will meet the home and the surrounding yard, and whether other work is needed before pouring.
Discuss future uses now
If you hope to add a roof, enclosure, spa or other structure, explain that before the slab is designed. A simple patio is not automatically suitable for structural loads. Confirm the relevant design and approval responsibilities. Do not rely on a later addition being possible merely because concrete has already been placed.
Choose a finish with upkeep in mind
Compare texture, cleaning and any sealer or maintenance recommendations. Ask for actual provider samples and documented work. Decide how joints, edges and transitions fit the layout. Use the worksheet below to organize a conversation; it is not a construction drawing or an accessibility assessment.
Patio planning worksheet
- 1Sketch the use
- 2Note site constraints
- 3Confirm the design
| Zone | Question | Your note |
|---|---|---|
| At the door | Can the door open and people pass? | Mark the clearance |
| Seating | Can chairs move without blocking the route? | Sketch furniture |
| Drainage | Where does water go now? | Record observations |
| Future structure | Will anything bear on the slab? | Bring plans |
